Bigger Than Just Storage

Did you know that the Self-Storage community has an Association? I didn’t, but they do! It is called the Self Storage Association or SSA for short. SSA was started in 1975 and is a not-for-profit organization. The SSA provides networking, legal resources, as well as information on new products to the self storage industry.

Recently, the SSA has tackled new rules when discussing self storage processes. For example; LIGHTING. Did you know that for the most part self storage units do not have lighting and are not required to have lighting in the units themselves? This is because, many States do not want units to become occupiable and by their way of thinking, if there are lights in the units then the unit can become a dwelling. While those are good rules to have - a light would be nice. The SSA requested an exception to the rule be made. The exception was granted, and now lighting is allowed in storage units either 400 sq ft. or areas that are able to be entered through the outside of the building. That is GREAT news and a win for self storage customers when it comes to actually being able to see what you are storing!

Fact - Did you know the SSA also provides courses and Webinars at SSA University Online. The SSA offers certification courses to become a Certified Self Storage Manager or CSSM as well as other learning opportunities. Whatever direction you are heading in, whether you need a storage unit or are wanting to own a storage unit, the SSA is here to help and to answer any questions you have.
